AMRAE secures record membership

France’s risk management association AMRAE holds its 27th annual conference this week with a record number of members, but understands it needs to keep evolving to meet the challenges faced by French companies. The association saw the number of risk managers in its ranks increase by more than 10% in 2018, reaching 841 professionals. Total membership, which also includes risk management consultants and lawyers, closed the year at 1,374 – compared to 1,110 in 2017. AMRAE has striven to expand its membership by taking the risk management gospel beyond large corporations that have traditionally filled its ranks. It is organising, for instance, events with small and medium-sized companies to promote the benefits of risk mapping and the effects of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The association has also opened its doors to future risk managers, with students now allowed to become members. About 170 students have already joined since September, explained AMRAE’s executive director Hubert de l’Estoile during a meeting with the press in Paris. Interest in developing risk management skills and methods has grown alongside the function becoming more complex, and its practitioners gaining responsibility within French companies. Among new challenges are growing cyber risks, which are increasingly on AMRAE’s agenda. The association has signed a partnership to investigate the subject with Medef, France’s main business association, and is closing another with ANSSI, the agency of the French government responsible for the country’s cybersecurity strategy. “Cyber risks are managed just like the other risks faced by companies,” said Brigitte Bouquot, the president of AMRAE, during the Paris meeting with journalists. “They are managed through risk mapping, through access to information and other things that are compatible with our work as risk managers.” AMRAE insists that risk management is a tool that can add value, as well as reducing the threat of serious problems. To facilitate this, the association has made an effort to secure partnerships with other trade organisations in areas such as internal control and business management, noted Anne Piot d’Abzac, AMRAE’s secretary general. AMRAE has also embraced its mission to disseminate risk management knowledge across the French economy by making it easier for members and external parties to access its literature. The association has developed a new search tool that will increase the efficiency with which members can find information on its website, said Mr De l’Estoile. It promises to allow searches that find new references and links between documents, reflecting the interconnected nature of issues risk managers must deal with. “AMRAE’s digital transformation entails how easy it is to access our information,” Mr De l’Estoile said. “Information is our treasure.” AMRAE also announced that 3,483 people had registered to attend its 2019 conference by yesterday afternoon. More than 2,900 had already turned up, with 640 of those being risk managers.
