AXA changes top team ahead of new strategic three-year plan

AXA XL has appointed Renaud Guidée as CEO of reinsurance, replacing Nancy Bewlay who has been named chief underwriting officer for AXA Group amid a wave of changes to the insurer’s leadership team. Scott Gunter, AXA XL’s CEO, said: “Over the past year we have worked to reposition our reinsurance portfolio and we are seeing the benefits of this work in our discussions with clients and brokers… We have an extremely talented team across reinsurance and there is huge potential for strategic growth in this market.” At group level, Françoise Gilles will take over from Guidée as AXA’s chief risk officer, reporting to group deputy CEO Frédéric De Courtois. Gilles was previously strategic development officer for AXA Asia. Bewlay moves into the newly created role ahead of the launch of AXA Group’s new strategic plan, which will be unveiled in the first quarter of 2024. “The creation of a chief underwriting officer function for the group will be key for the implementation of our growth and technical excellence ambition for the next strategic plan. Nancy Bewlay, who has had a decisive contribution in the turnaround of AXA XL and AXA XL Re, has the perfect experience and track record to lead this new function,” said Thomas Buberl, CEO of AXA. Bewlay joins the management committee alongside Gilles and Anu Venkataraman, who has been named chief strategy officer in addition to her current role as group head of investor relations. Under Buberl’s new management committee structure, Georges Desvaux, Antimo Perretta and Gordon Watson will step down. “2023 is a pivotal year for AXA as it marks the end of our Driving Progress plan and the start of a new strategic cycle for the coming three years. We are on track to exceed the objectives of our current plan,” said Buberl. “This renewed team confirms the strength and diversity of AXA’s internal talent pool. It also gives us the opportunity to evolve the perimeters of some of our markets and central functions, to prepare the group for the implementation of our new strategic ambition and our long-term priorities,” he added. AXA has also made changes to management in its key regions. Patrick Cohen has been appointed CEO of European Markets and Health, handing over the role of CEO of AXA France to Guillaume Borie, currently deputy CEO of AXA France. Hassan El-Shabrawishi, CEO of AXA Africa, has been named CEO of International Markets, overseeing AXA’s operations in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Turkey, India and southeast Asia. AXA Japan and AXA Greater China (Hong Kong and China) will report directly to George Stansfield, group deputy CEO and general secretary. Gordon Watson moves to non-executive chair for Asia. Cohen, Borie and El-Shabrawishi will also join Buberl’s new management committee, which will start work together from 1 July.
