Congratulations Parima and welcome to Commercial Risk Asia

Just over 300 people attended the event. This was a brilliant turn out for a first effort and more importantly roughly half were risk managers-which is great balance for the inaugural conference. This was not actually the first Parima event. Last April Mr Baron and the team held a one-day event in Singapore, also hosted by myself, to really test the water and see if the concept would fly. This event proved without doubt that Parima would work and so it has.hideThe reason it will work is that such an association was badly needed in Asia. Risk management is really starting to take off in the region as corporations wake up to the value offered by taking the discipline seriously. There is also a sense that the attitude towards insurance buying is maturing as Asian companies expand into new territories and begin to really appreciate the value offered by a properly structured insurance programme. This means that there is a fast-developing community of risk and insurance management professionals in this huge and diverse region that-Malaysia, Japan and Singapore aside-really do not have any formal representative bodies. There is great appetite for risk education and training in this region as was proven by the discussions at the event and Parima has committed to providing that service to its fast-growing membership. Julia Graham, President of the Federation of European Risk Management Associations (Ferma), was a high profile speaker at the event, taking part in three different sessions. She and Mr Baron confirmed that discussions are already underway between the two groups on how the Ferma accreditation system can be adapted for the Asian risk management community. This is excellent news. As we have stated before, it would be madness for the various regional and national risk management representative bodies to go charging off in different directions and create a whole raft of different qualifications and certification systems that ultimately fail to connect and enable risk managers to carry their qualifications across the globe. Our recently published Global Risk Frontiers survey of risk managers around the world, including Asia, found that risk management is really on the cusp of becoming a serious and lasting boardroom matter at last. But the absence of a globally-recognised and portable system of education and certification is holding the industry back and preventing the community from becoming a true profession on a par with lawyers, accountants and even auditors. Perhaps the cooperation shown by Ferma and Parima will spur other regional bodies such as Alarys in South America, IRMSA in South Africa, RMIA in Australia and not least RIMS in North America into a more collective global effort for the good of all? As regular readers of Commercial Risk Europe and sister title Commercial Risk Africa will know, we have championed this cause ever since Ferma announced its plans. We have hosted some great discussions on the topic at our events in Europe and most recently in Kenya. We now intend to support the Asian risk and insurance management community on a more consistent basis through our new publication Commercial Risk Asia, of which this Parima report is the first issue. This newsletter will be followed up by a full report of the Parima conference and wider risk and insurance management news from the region early in the New Year. Further editions of Commercial Risk Asia will be published for the Asian and international risk and insurance management community throughout next year based around the key industry events. We really hope that our efforts will help to support the Parima team in their ambitious and worthy goals and that the Asian corporate risk management and transfer communities find it a useful platform through which to further grow and develop this exciting market.
