German air traffic control hit by cyberattack
Attack linked to pro-Russian hackers
Germany’s air traffic control system operated by Deutsche Flugsicherung has confirmed that it was hit by a cyberattack last week.
Fights were unaffected and the company has yet to disclose whether any data was accessed during the attack, which local press have alleged was carried out by pro-Russian hackers APT28, also known as Fancy Bear.
The group has a history of attacks on critical infrastructure. But in Germany, APT28 is known for a cyberattack against the Bundestag in 2015.
Deutsche Flugsicherung, which is based near Frankfurt, said it has put measures in place to minimise the impact of the attack as it continues to operate as usual. It has also informed all internal staff and security authorities in Germany.
