Hurrell to step down as Airmic CEO
Airmic CEO John Hurrell is to leave his post after nine years at the helm of the UK risk and insurance managers’ association.
Airmic said it has begun the process of appointing a new CEO and explained that Mr Hurrell will remain in the post until a successor is appointed.
Mr Hurrell became Airmic’s CEO in 2008 after a 30-year career at broker Marsh and McLennan.
On announcing his departure, he said: “I have had a wonderful innings at Airmic and am hugely grateful for the support I have received. Airmic has the most exciting business plan ever and fantastic support from its board, members and sponsors, but I feel the time is right for new leadership to take Airmic to the next stage on behalf of its members.”
Mr Hurrell noted that he introduced a nine-year maximum term for Airmic board members when he was first appointed CEO. “So I feel it is only right for me to hand over the reins having completed nine years at the helm,” he said.
He added that he would like to remain a part of the insurance market “in some capacity”.
Clive Clarke, Airmic chairman, said: “Under his leadership, the association has gone from strength to strength. John has done a huge amount to raise the profile and standards of the risk profession, and has also helped to influence the way commercial insurance is conducted in the UK. He leaves Airmic in an excellent position to continue its mission.”
He added: “John’s replacement will take over at a critical and exciting time for Airmic members. This is a hugely influential role, and we anticipate interest from people of the highest calibre. Our priority will be to ensure a fair, transparent and successful transition.”
Airmic board member and honorary secretary Nick Hughes will head up a succession panel alongside Paul Goulding and Lynda Lucas, the next Airmic chairmen. An external head-hunting firm, Odgers Berndtson, has been appointed to help find a new Airmic CEO.
Airmic said it will announce the new appointment in due course.
We at Commercial Risk Europe have always been thoroughly impressed by Mr Hurrell and he will be sorely missed. We wish him every success in his future ventures.
