IRM launches digital risk management qualification

The Institute of Risk Management (IRM) is set to launch a new digital risk management qualification early next month, ahead of a planned revamp of one of its core qualifications in 2019. The IRM will start offering its International Certificate in Digital Risk Management in early December. The new qualification is aimed at preparing risk managers for the digital economy and fourth industrial revolution. Enrolment for the course will be open from 3 December and is suitable for anyone with an interest in, or responsibilities for, managing digital risk at a strategic, project or operational level. Awarded by the IRM and developed with support from the University of Warwick, the Digital Certificate in Risk Management provides grounding in cyber risk and cybersecurity principles. It also explores the implications of digital disruption and innovation. The course covers digital risk management principles and practices, including cybersecurity and incident management. It also teaches students how to carry out risk assessments, audits and assurance for digital and emerging risk. The IRM is hosting a webinar to coincide with the launch on 12 December, and is running an online quiz for risk managers to test their digital knowledge. “The digital world offers huge benefits and opportunities but the risks must also be clearly understood and managed,” said Dr Ian Livsey, chief executive of the Institute of Risk Management, when announcing the new qualification earlier this year. “Tomorrow’s risk experts clearly need these skills but we also forecast interest from other business professionals who can see that they also need to be on top of these developments,” he said. The IRM’s Risk Agenda 2025 research highlights technological change as the biggest driver of uncertainty for organisations today. However, IRM research shows that less than 40% of the risk management community feel well equipped to understand technological changes and support their organisations when it comes to digital risk. According to Carolyn Williams, the IRM’s director of corporate relations, the basic principles of good risk management will stay the same in the digital age. However, there are new risks to address and the potential for new tools and techniques to help risk managers. The Certificate in Digital Risk Management has been designed to equip risk practitioners and allow them to apply their skills in an increasingly digital world, she said. Fittingly, the qualification will be delivered and examined online. It will involve about 180 hours of study over approximately six months, ending with an examination. Separately, the IRM is conducting a “fundamental” review of its International Diploma in Enterprise Risk Management, one of its cornerstone qualifications. The institute offers an educational career pathway for risk managers through its Certificate, Diploma and Certified Risk Professional offerings. The current diploma was launched in 2015 and is due for a review. Barbara Amponsah-Abedi, director of qualifications at the IRM, told CRE: “We would like to ensure that the qualification is meeting the needs of the profession. More importantly, we want to ensure that the diploma equips future risk professionals with practical knowledge and skills.” Recent months have seen the IRM consult key stakeholders, as well as conduct an online survey. The consultation has now concluded and the IRM is analysing its findings. “We should be in a position to communicate the outcome of the review with our members next year,” said Ms Amponsah-Abedi. Changes to the diploma will also require the IRM to revisit the syllabus of its International Certificate in ERM, which forms the first two modules of the diploma.
