XL Catlin appoints new president of global excess casualty

XL Catlin has appointed Donnacha Smyth as president of global excess casualty insurance, in a move that sees him return to the insurer after two years heading the international excess casualty team at Aspen Insurance.

Mr Smyth, who was chief excess casualty officer at XL Catlin between 2007 and 2016, will be based in Dublin. He will lead the group’s global excess casualty underwriting teams in North America, Dublin and Bermuda, taking up the role on 3 September 2018.

Joe Tocco, chief executive of North America insurance at XL Catlin, said: “Donnacha’s broad experience in this space, as well as his in-depth knowledge of our organisation, will be a fantastic asset to the ongoing growth of our business and the strengthening of our existing relationships with clients and brokers. We are delighted to welcome him back to XL Catlin.”

XL Catlin has also promoted Carla Greaves to chief underwriting officer for global excess casualty, from her current role leading excess casualty underwriting for Bermuda. Ms Greaves will continue to be based in Bermuda.

Mr Tocco said: “I am excited to see Carla step into this new leadership role; she is known in the market for her expert underwriting skills and for helping solve very complex risk management challenges for our clients and brokers.”
