Zurich appoints new head of US casualty international programmes underwriting

Scott Toland has joined Zurich Insurance Group as head of US casualty international programmes underwriting within its commercial insurance business. Zurich said he will be responsible for “driving underwriting leadership and leading operational transformation in the US casualty international programme”.

Mr Toland joins Zurich from AIG, where he held various leadership positions. Most recently, he served as senior vice-president, leading their risk management practice for the western region of the US. Prior to this role, he was responsible for AIG’s casualty operation, strategy, underwriting and marketing in the western region of the US. He will be based in Los Angeles and report to Ralph Brand, global head of casualty, commercial insurance.

Mr Brand said: “I am pleased to have Scott on board to lead our US casualty international programmes underwriting. He brings extensive industry experience and deep understanding of the casualty space to the role. His expertise and leadership skills will be instrumental as we focus on strengthening our underwriting capabilities in casualty.”

According to Zurich, as part of its strategy, its commercial insurance business “continues to focus on performance in long-tail lines of business while balancing its portfolio mix to reduce volatility”.

The insurer added: “The company is committed to providing customers with leading products and services tailored to their needs to help them manage their casualty risks.”
