Ferma and CRE launch 2018 Risk Awards

Ferma and Commercial risk Europe are pleased to announce the launch of our European Risk Management Awards programme for 2018, which aims to promote the value and standing of risk management in Europe, culminating in a gala dinner in Brussels this November. This year’s programme will see a new Emerging Risk Initiative of the Year award for risk managers, as well as two new rising star designations for companies that provide services to our readers and Ferma members. In addition, we will be asking risk and insurance managers to vote on firms and individuals from service providers delivering first-class performance. The European Risk Management Awards are now in their third year and will build on the success of predecessors. Last year Eberhard Faller, senior vice-president of central insurances at BASF, took the European Risk Manager of the Year prize home to Germany. The Awards will now alternate between Brussels, the home of Ferma, and London, the home of Commercial Risk Europe. We are delighted that the 2018 awards programme will return to Brussels on 21 November, where they began in 2016, and that Belgian risk management association Belrim will be the host partner. We are equally pleased to announce that the 2019 awards programme will take place in London and that the host partner will be UK risk management association Airmic. We are also pleased to confirm the continued support of Allianz Global Corporate Specialty as the headline partner for 2018. A key issue for Ferma, which represents 22 member associations across Europe and 4,700 risk and insurance managers, and Commercial Risk Europe since we launched in 2010 to champion the cause of the risk and insurance management community in Europe, is the need to raise the profile of the profession and showcase its value. The European Risk Management Awards are a key part of this effort and once again will recognise the highest achievers within the European risk management community. They will also highlight and reward excellence and innovation within the core service provider sector – insurers, brokers and professional service firms – that provide the best tools for risk and insurance managers to do their job. To ensure the Awards remain relevant and continue to keep one eye firmly on the future, we have introduced a new Emerging Risk Initiative of the Year award in the Excellence in Risk Management category group. Once again there will be seven awards in the Excellence in Customer Service category. Against the backdrop of much transformational change within the insurance industry, the Awards also recognise high-achieving individuals within customer service firms. We will introduce two new rising star categories in this section. To ensure readers of CRE and Ferma members have their say, we will invite risk managers and insurance buyers to vote online for firms and individuals that stand out from the crowd. We will also invite companies to submit standardised entries that meet a strict criteria. The entry process for all categories will open on 1 March 2018. Commercial Risk Europe and Ferma are committed to creating a fully independent and highly respected judging panel. It will comprise leading risk managers within Ferma and its national associations, to ensure these Awards are created and judged by risk managers for risk managers. Ferma president Jo Willaert said: “The Awards continue to help us raise the profile of risk management and risk managers in Europe, as well as highlight the contribution that the prize-winning and shortlisted risk managers make to their organisations. You can also follow the Awards on Twitter using #euroriskawards. Last year’s Awards in London were a huge success, with more than 130 entries submitted for the 14 categories. Mr Faller won top prize at the ceremony held at the Gibson Hall in London, in front of more than 300 colleagues from the world of risk management and transfer. The other Excellence in Risk Management categories saw Özge Öz, risk manager at LC Waikiki and member of Turkish risk management association Erma, win the Rising Star of the Year award. Matthias Beck, manager of group risk and insurance at Adolf Würth GmbH and Co, won the Innovative Insurance Programme of the Year award. The Risk Manager Lifetime Achievement award was won by Andrew Bradley, head of group risk services at Nestlé Vevey and member of the Swiss risk management association Sirm. The gala diner also announced a host of winners in customer service categories. Captive Management Solution of the Year was won by Willis Towers Watson for its proactive and innovative approach to helping clients deal with issues thrown up by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Base Erosion and Profit Shifting initiative. Chubb won Claims Innovation of the Year for the creation and international rollout of its Claims Services Portal. Technology Innovation of the Year was won by AXA MATRIX Risk Consultants which, in collaboration with a number of academic and industrial partners, developed the innovative FRAME@Risk software tool for seismic risk assessment and management. Global Programme Innovation of the Year winner was AIG for successfully piloting the first multinational ‘smart contract’-based insurance policies using blockchain technology. The next award was Emerging Risk Solution of the Year, won by International SOS. The judges said the firm developed a potentially game-changing innovative solution that uses the latest multi-modal technology to track, communicate with and report on employee risk exposure better than ever before. Insurer Innovation of the Year was won by Munich Re for its customised and innovative insurance solution for soil decontamination market entrepreneurs, Reterro Inc. Willis Towers Watson won its second prize of the evening, in the Broker Innovation of the Year category. It launched an innovative product called CyFly, which the judges felt could represent a defining moment for the aviation industry’s approach to cyber risk within an ERM framework. Last year’s final group of awards recognised industry leadership. Bruno Laval – country manager for France and regional manager of southern Europe, insurance at XL Catlin – won Insurer Leader of the Year. Enrico Vanin, CEO of Aon Italy, won Broker Leader of the Year. The final award of the evening was Lifetime Achievement, won by Stephen Catlin, who during the past 30-plus years turned a two-person reinsurance company into a $4.1bn international firm.
