Ferma awards founder certifications in Venice

Awarding 49 risk managers with their certification at its forum in Venuce yesterday, the organisation also unveiled the name of the programme, rimap. In addition to rimap certification designated by Ferma, there will also be a version managed by Parima. According to Ferma, certification is designed to reinforce the standing of the risk management profession in Europe. It will provide independent confirmation of the professional competences, experience and standards of individual risk managers, and accreditation for the risk management programmes of educational bodies, it said. Certification is built around four pillars: knowledge, experience, continuous professional development (CPD) and a code of ethics.hideMany of the 49 risk managers and risk professionals, mostly Ferma board members and leaders of the main European national risk management associations, were handed their professional certifications on stage in Venice. The first batch of 'founder' certifications were in recognition of experience and existing qualifications. They were awarded to risk professionals that had helped design and test the certification programme. The group will now act as 'ambassadors' for the certification process in their respective countries. Ferma, which continues to build the programme's educational content, expects to begin accepting applications for certifying other risk managers early next year and hopes to award the first live certifications by the spring. Opening the forum on Monday, Julia Graham, Ferma president, said that certification had the potential to 'transform the profession'. She thanked Ferma certification steering group leader Michel Dennery, who is also deputy chief risk officer of GDF SUEZ, for his 'tireless' work on certification. "Without his leadership we would not be where we are now," she said. Mr Dennery told delegates in Venice that the certification programme had taken four years to complete and had required the support of the Ferma associations. Mr Dennery said: "Today, there is a strong expectation from stakeholders about risk management; that is why we have created the first high level pan-European recognition of the profession of risk management that will respond to these expectations." Karel Van Hulle, Chairman of the Insurance and Reinsurance Stakeholder Group at EIOPA, also welcomed the launch of rimap. "The financial crisis showed clearly the need for good risk management. It is in the interest of all stakeholders that firms attach great importance to the timely identification, evaluation and management of their risks and to the mitigation of those risks," said Mr Van Hulle. "Risk management should have a higher status in our educational institutions. I welcome the fact that Ferma has taken up this challenge and I hope that the initiative will be successful," he added. Ms Graham told risk managers that there is now an opportunity for them to lead the debate on risk in their organisations. "Risk managers no longer just monitor, but have the opportunity to lead–we are no longer practitioners of a discipline, but practitioners of a profession. Professional Certification...is a key strategy for Ferma in that transformation," she said.
