First pass Ferma’s rimap exam as federation vows to develop risk leadership role

The move marks a big step in Ferma's rimap certification journey that forms part of president Jo Willaert's continued focus on education, communication and risk leadership as he enters his second year in office. On the opening day of Ferma's biennial seminar, held this year in Malta, 22 risk managers sat the first rimap exam. 18 passed and received the rimap qualification at a ceremony held on Monday evening. They join other risk managers who were previously awarded the designation as founder holders at Ferma's forum in Venice last year. Michel Dennery, chairman of the rimap programme, presented the awards and congratulated the successful candidates. "Delivering a first rimap examination in 2016 has been a key objective for Ferma that is now achieved. The first certified risk managers will be seen in the future as the pioneers in the new standard for the risk manager's profession," he said.hideThe examination consisted of 100 questions based on rimap's body of knowledge. The questions were written by seven European risk managers from five Ferma member associations. Julia Graham, member of the rimap steering committee and knowledge team, as well as immediate past chair of Ferma, said it has sometimes been a challenge to find consensus on rimap. These difficulties are also what make the certification "different and quite unique", she added. The first rimap exams are the latest step on its journey since launch this time last year. Over the last year Ferma has created rimap's body of knowledge, accredited the first six education providers that meet required standards and licensed the first continual professional development (CPD) programmes. Attention now turns to making rimap a success and fine-tuning the scheme. "The next step is to refine the rimap examination on the basis of experience so that it reflects the complexity and diversity of the profession, and then to make the examination available for as many risk managers as possible," said Isabel Martinez Torre-Enciso, vice-president of Ferma and member of the rimap steering committee. Opening the Ferma Seminar, president Mr Willaert said rimap will remain a key focus in the years ahead. "I am very proud of the work and delivery of rimap," said Mr Willaert. He noted that it has been a long journey with difficulties along the way. "We will continue to tackle rimap with vigour," he added. Mr Willaert said the Ferma seminar provided a good opportunity to support and build upon the three key aims and areas of focus for his presidency. These are communication, education and leadership. Along with rimap, the results of Ferma's 8th European Risk and Insurance Survey this week play an important role in educating the risk profession, said Mr Willaert. "The findings of this (survey) report, combined with Ferma's mission and strategy adopted at our general meeting in June, will shape our activities over the next two years, including the continuing development of our professional certification programme rimap," he explained. The survey is a very important tool to help educate our members and the wider risk community, he said. The seminar also saw Ferma member associations deliver workshops on education topics such as Solvency II and cyber risk. On the key area of communication, the seminar afforded risk managers the opportunity to discuss hot topics on leading risk and insurance issues, continued Mr Willaert. Communication and education are important in order for risk managers to step into the risk leadership roles that many desire. "Communication and education are tools to get towards leadership," said Mr Willaert.
