GVNW looks to develop the next generation of risk managers

“How to find and develop the next generation of risk professionals is one of the most important issues for our organisation,” said Dr Alexander Mahnke, chairman of the GVNW. GVNW was formed earlier this year through the merger of German risk and insurance manager association DVS and the country’s in-house broker association bfv. Historically, most risk and insurance managers received their training and experience in the insurance and broking community, while some come to the role from other areas such as a legal or engineering. Although companies can continue to draw on the insurance industry for future risk managers, the challenges they face mean this will no longer suffice, explained Mr Mahnke. “Risk managers will need different skills. The skillset of future risk professionals will need to be more diverse. I expect we will see more risk managers with skills as engineers and mathematicians,” he said.hide“We realise that we need to provide for the next generation and we have started working with schools and universities to demonstrate that this is a profession their students should be interested in. However, there is still a long way to go,” said Mr Mahnke. GVNW is working with three universities to promote the risk and insurance management profession. It has invited a number of students to attend its annual symposium this September. The event sees two workshops aimed at new risk and insurance managers, one organised by Germany’s insurance federation – the GDV – and the other by a group of young professionals and GVNW members. The future risk management profession will also need to be more diverse, according to Mr Mahnke. The vast majority of delegates at the GVNW symposiums continue to be male and aged 50-plus, he noted. “That needs to change. If we can get people from diverse professional and personal backgrounds, issues such as innovation are also more likely to be resolved,” he added. The launch of rimap, the risk management certification scheme developed by Ferma, could also help deliver better risk and insurance managers in the future, said Mr Mahnke. “We support rimap and we will see how it will be accepted as training for risk managers in Germany. It is important to put content before form. It is great to have the certified title but before you get it, you need to understand what you are doing,” he said. Rimap, which is set to launch later this year, continues to develop its content, according to Jörg Henne, the recently appointed managing director of the GVNW. “This is an area we will watch carefully and give our input where we can. Education is an important issue and a big challenge for the future. But once established, rimap will be a useful tool for getting certified knowledge,” he said. Rimap training courses are expected to be available in Germany through accredited educational bodies. Once rimap certification is achieved, it will be possible for risk managers to earn the necessary continuing professional development points required to retain the designation through various GVNW training programmes, Mr Henne said.
