South African road data [johannesburg]—A report in Autodealer reveals the estimated figures for road traffic accidents in South Africa. It said that, since the beginning of the year, there have been 653,285 accidents, leaving some 10,730 people dead, injuring 97,765, paralysing 5,960 and costing the country more than R200m. The report suggests many of the accidents are caused by unroadworthy vehicles, pedestrians, distracted driving and driving under the influence. AON/TNO oil modelling [london]—Aon has announced, that, in partnership with TNO, a new modelling tool—the Aon Loss Estimating Risk Tool (ALERT)—will be developed for oil, gas and petrochemical clients. The new tool is able to evaluate loss potentials for a full range of scenarios including vapour cloud explosion, jet fires, spill fires and vessel ruptures. Neil Harrison, Group Managing Director, Aon Global Risk Consulting said: “Introducing ALERT is important for our clients in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries. It is more than an estimated maximum loss tool as it addresses facility siting studies, new plant layout considerations and modelling requirements. This is the first up-to-date modelling tool for our clients in this sector and will enable them to assess liability exposures and the robustness of their third-party liability insurance programmes.” ALERT is scheduled to be released in mid-2015 after a market testing process. Insurance expansion deal [paris]—IFC—a member of the World Bank Group—and AXA Group have signed an agreement to expand insurance coverage, improve safety and foster economic growth in emerging markets. The five areas of cooperation are: co-investments, with an initial focus on Africa and Latin America; improving road safety; increasing insurance coverage for women; infrastructure development; and sustainability and responsible investments. “There is a significant demand for financial services in emerging countries as people want to achieve security for their families and businesses and, relative to other sub-segments of the financial sector, the insurance industry remains underdeveloped,” said Denis Duverne, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of AXA. “One of the key pillars of our strategic plan is the acceleration of activities in these high growth markets, and we are very enthusiastic to be working with IFC to contribute to developing insurance coverage and capacity.”
