PARIMA expects 300 delegates at latest event as intangible risks take centre stage

The Pan-Asia Risk and Insurance Management Association (PARIMA) expects up to 300 delegates to attend its final regional conference for 2019 on 4-5 November, which will be held at the Pullman Kuala Lumpur City Centre Hotel in Malaysia's capital. PARIMA now has more than 2,000 members representing more than 1,130 companies across the Asia-Pacific region, and has been a real success story in a region of the world where risk and insurance management remains relatively immature but is fast growing up with the support of the association and its partners. Commercial Risk Europe editorial director Adrian Ladbury co-hosted PARIMA’s first gathering in Singapore at the end of 2014, and its founding president Franck Baron, risk manager with International SOS, and his team deserve a huge amount of credit for what they have achieved during the past five years for the blossoming risk and insurance management profession across this huge region. Risk and insurance management education is a central tenet of PARIMA’s goal as it seeks to equip members with the tools and skills needed to help guide their companies through an increasingly volatile and uncertain economic, financial and political landscape. The PARIMA events, such as this latest in Kuala Lumpar, provide individual risk and insurance managers with a great opportunity to share experiences, learn from experts and raise their profile within their organisations. Delegates from companies including AirAsia Berhad, Petronas, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, PPB Group Berhad, Malaysia Airlines Berhad, Rolls-Royce, CCM Berhad, UEM Group, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd, DRB-HICOM Berhad, IHH Healthcare Berhad, Bolloré, Jardine Cycle & Carriage, Lazada, UEM Sunrise Berhad will be attending the event. New and intangible risks are a central theme of the event in Kuala Lumpar. As PARIMA explained, these risks – not least cyber – require different risk management approaches to those deployed in the past. “With transformative business models at play, risk managers need to continually adapt and equip themselves to stay relevant and ahead of the game. This conference will challenge risk managers to embrace new perspectives when looking at risk, managing risks and developing themselves,” explained PARIMA in a pre-event statement. The topics covered during the event will be centred around three sub-themes: redefining the risk landscape; redefining the risk management approach; and redefining the risk profession. This reflects the overall conference theme – 'Redefining Risk'. One of the main highlights of the Malaysian conference will be the launch of PARIMA’s Risk Competency Assessment, which complements its existing Risk Competency Framework. “The project is one of PARIMA’s initiatives to continually help the profession, to have a set of competencies that risk managers should acquire to ensure success in their chosen field,” explained the association. The conference will also shine a spotlight on the topical subject of risk and sustainability. Sharing their thoughts on this hot topic will be: Datuk Lim, chief risk officer of Tenaga Nasional Berhad; Victoria Tan, group head, enterprise risk management and sustainability at Ayala Corporation; and Teresa Wong, chief risk officer of Zurich General Insurance Malaysia Berhad. Steve Tunstall, general secretary of PARIMA, will host a Q&A session afterwards. The event will then dig down deeper into core risk and insurance management topics, including data analytics, employee wellbeing, political risk, cyber, captives and risk culture. Five separate masterclasses will be held on the first day of the event, focused on intermediary relationships, claims management, organisational resilience, risk management competency development and country risk analysis.
