Thirst for risk knowledge shows good FoRM

Over 600 students and professionals from 62 countries interested in risk education-the numbers from IRM's Fundamentals of Risk Management (FoRM) course underline the growing demand for risk management education. Since launching in December 2010, FoRM has attracted huge global interest from those looking to find out about risk or check that their previous learning is up with current thinking. Data from the two-day course-which covers risk management essentials such as definitions, frameworks and ISO 31000-shows that delegates come from a range of far-flung locations.hideFrom Afghanistan to Vietnam, Brazil to Bangladesh, Uganda to the UAE, the course has attracted a myriad of nationalities all seeking to supplement their risk management knowledge. But what could be driving this thirst for risk management education? Tina Asgari, IRM's Development and Marketing Manager [learning], said booking statistics show an even split between attendees put forward by their firms and those who choose to book themselves. She added: "This suggests that both organisations and individuals are recognising the benefits that a solid grounding in risk management can provide. With a growing swathe of regulatory requirements and legal statutes currently being implemented across various regions, FoRM has been tailored to ensure it is applicable to all sectors and industries, allowing it to meet the upsurge in demand for those with an understanding of current risk-related issues." And the climate has never been more suited for organisations and individuals to add to their risk knowledge. Most people only need look as far as the national or international news to be reminded of the dangers posed by an uncertain and constantly evolving global marketplace. In a world where companies suddenly founder before fading into obscurity, where multinationals and government agencies are hacked by malicious agents and where reputations are won and lost in a split second, good risk management education now has the opportunity to demonstrate its benefits in helping businesses survive and thrive, as well as offering the all-important factor of assurance. But what exactly does the two-day course cover? Structured around the ISO 31000 standard, it consists of interactive elements, presentations and discussions, taught by experienced, qualified risk professionals. Each delegate receives a folder of takeaway guidance and slides for future use. The aim is to equip employees with the transferable tools and techniques needed to transform their organisation. Everything is structured to ensure that all learning can travel with each delegate from industry to industry as his or her career progresses. Recent delegates have said they took the course to consolidate their learning, to gain a greater understanding of the topic and to understand the basic principles of enterprise risk management (ERM). FoRM runs at numerous locations across the UK, as well as in Dubai, Hong Kong and Poland, while future sessions are scheduled to run in Spain and Singapore.
