AGCS name Scheffel as Berger successor in London Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS) will appoint Carsten Scheffel as Chief Executive Officer of its AG branch office in London, effective from 1 October, as the replacement of Andrews Berger who the company previously announced has been promoted to its board. Hugh Burgess, currently Head of Marine (Americas), will take over Mr Scheffel’s current role as Chief Executive Officer for the Americas region. In his new role Mr Scheffel will assume responsibility for the major industrial and specialist insurance activities of AGCS in the UK, Ireland, Belgium, The Netherlands and its recently formed team in South Africa.hideHe has worked at Allianz since 1978, and was previously Chief Agent of AGCS in Canada before moving to AGCS’s Chicago offices in 2006. He takes on this role in a continued phase of AGCS’s succession planning, which saw the promotion of Mr Berger. Mr Burgess will be in charge of AGCS’s business in the US, Canada and Latin America including Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Brazil. The Americas region is an important growth area for AGCS, forming 30% of the company’s 2010 gross written premiums, the company said. Mr Burgess has been head of AGCS’s marine business in the Americas since January 2009. He was previously Chief Underwriting Officer, Specialty Insurance, at Allianz company Fireman’s Fund until this company’s marine portfolio was transferred to AGCS in 2009. His successor as Head of Marine (Americas) will be announced in the coming weeks. Chartis appoints new Managing Director for UK business Chartis in Europe has announced the appointment of Nicolas Aubert as Managing Director of Chartis Insurance UK Limited. Reporting to Alexander Baugh, CEO of Chartis Europe, Mr Aubert takes over from James Shea, who has been appointed to the new role of President of Global Specialty Lines. Mr Aubert joined Chartis in June 2002 as Deputy General Manager for France. He was promoted to General Manager in 2003 and from July 2010 has led the 12 country operations in South Europe. “We are delighted to welcome Nicolas Aubert to the UK. Nicolas has built up tremendous experience, first of all in leading our French business—the fourth largest country operation in the Chartis international world—and subsequently as head of South Europe. Chartis has a great history of moving executives between markets, and benefiting from the cross-fertilisation of ideas and expertise that results,” said Mr Baugh. Matthew Holmes to head Beazley Energy Team Beazley has appointed Matthew Holmes to head the company’s energy team having moved from Catlin, where he was energy class underwriter, covering upstream, downstream and casualty risks. Energy risks have accounted for a growing proportion of the business underwritten by Beazley’s marine and energy division in recent years, surpassing $100m in gross premiums in 2010. Clive Washbourn, Head of Beazley’s marine division, said: “Energy is a complex and often challenging class, requiring underwriters with a deep understanding of the energy value chain and their clients’ business. We see energy risks as a core component of our business and expect our participation in the energy market to continue to grow.” David Boyle joins Aon Risk Solutions’ aviation team David Boyle has joined Aon Risk Solutions (ARS) aviation team as Head of the Asia Pacific (APAC) region. Based in London, Mr Boyle will report directly to Simon Knechtli, Global Head of Airlines and Head of ARS’ aviation team. Mr Boyle joins Aon from Willis, where he was regional director for APAC. He started his career in insurance as a claims broker in 1993 at Marsh, rising to vice-president of the firm in 2000, before joining Willis in 2002. He will be responsible for the 14 members of the APAC aviation team in London and Singapore, with focus across the airline, aerospace and general aviation sectors. CII appoints Graeme Sutton as director of corporate development The UK’s Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) has appointed Graeme Sutton as Director of Corporate Development. He will join the CII on 1 August from M4 Underwriting Limited, and brings with him a wealth of experience in general insurance having held senior roles at Fusion, Zurich and Independent Insurance. Steve Jenkins, Director of Financial Services and Insurance Markets, said: “I am delighted that Graeme is joining the CII at this exciting time when the market is increasingly looking to invest in the professional development of its people. Graeme’s expertise will help us ensure we are responsive and relevant to the needs of the market.” “The Aldermanbury Declaration and chartered status are very topical at the moment; they play a crucial role in the increased desire within our sector for standards of professionalism that can be clearly recognised by peers and public alike. I am looking forward to making a significant contribution to the CII’s extensive work in further raising standards of professionalism within the market,” said Mr Sutton. Antares appoints Oliver Goodwin as Marine Excess of Loss Deputy Underwriter Antares has appointed Oliver Goodwin as Deputy Underwriter for Marine Excess of Loss. Mr Goodwin joins after four years at Aon Benfield where he was most recently Marine and Energy Reinsurance Broker in the Global Re specialty division. In this position, he worked with international and LMX reinsurance clients and was responsible for marketing reinsurance products and analysing specific risk profiles. In his new role Mr Goodwin will assist Olly Lucking, Marine Excess of Loss Manager.
